A person may suffer from alcoholic liver diseases, peripheral neuropathy, etc. An addict, even though he wishes to quit alcohol; willpower and determination may not be strong. Considering all these factors an attempt was made to prepare a special formulation which has multi-dimensional effects.
This medicine protects liver and other vital organs from the ill-effects of alcohol. It counteracts withdrawal effect and also helps to create a mental stability to quit alcohol or other drugs by its psychotropic effects. Chemistry: Active principle is of alkaloidal nature known as punarnavine. Pharmacological Action: This drug is popularly used for its anti-inflammatory, diuretic and hepato-protective properties. It proved to be efficacious by protecting the liver against CCl4 induced liver jaundice (Indian Drugs, 32(4)). This drug is also useful in treating jaundice.a also possesses marked immunno-modulatory effect and also anabolic effect. BHUMYAMLAKI
Botanical Name: Phyllanthus niruri Family: Euphorbiace Botanical Description: Annual herb, 30-60 cm high, quite glabrous, stem often branched at the base, angular, leaves numerous, sub-sessile, distichous often imbricating, 6-13 by 3-6mm, elliptic, oblong, obtuse.
Whole plant is used Experimental studies have proved that it protects from experimentally induced liver toxicity and detoxifies the liver. It also possesses antiviral properties. (Indian Drugs 2(4)). It reversed CCl4 induced liver damage in rats by reducing SGPT, SGOT, alkaline phosphatase, bilious and pentobarbitone sleep-time. Plant extract inhibits endogenous DNA polymerase of hepatitis virus and binds to the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus in-vitro. KATUKIBotanical Name: Picrorrhiza kurroa Family: Scrophulariaceae Habitat: Distributed in the Northwestern Himalayas from Kashmir to Sikkim. Botanical Description: This is a perennial, bitter, woody stock.
Chemistry: Contains a bitter crystalline glycoside, picrorrhizin and cathartic acid. Also contains vanillic acid, D-mannitol, kutkiol acetate and kutkisterol. Pharmacology: It has beneficial effects on liver which seem to be probably due to stimulation of the normal hepatic cells to its protective action on the liver against viral toxins and also due to its effect in the regeneration of damaged liver issue. It also shows protective action against hepatotoxic agent like carbon tetrachloride, etc. Total extracts of root revealed marked hydrochloretic and anti-bacterial activities suggesting its potential value in infective hepatitis and urinary tract infections.(Pandey and Chaturvedi,1969 & Vohra et. Botanical Name: Andrographis paniculata Family: Acanthaceae Habitat: Distributed throughout India, in the plains, also in forests as undergrowth. Botanical Description: An erect or prostrate much branched annual herb with rooted nodes; leaves opposite; strigose with appressed hairs on both sides; flowers white in heads, ray compressed. Pharmacological Action of some Individual Ingredients Curcuma longa (Haridra): This popular herb is reported to possess hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory (Aora et al, 1962, 71), Antiarthritic (Dinesh & Gupta, 1972) and antimicrobial activities and also antiprotozoal activities. Asparageus racemosus (Shatavari): This popular Ayurvedic drug is known for its immuno-modulatory, hepato-protective and galacatogogue properties. It also possesses antistress, anxiolytic properties. It helps in inducing natural pattern of sleep. Rajatha Bhasma: Both the experimental and clinical studies carried out on this Bhasma in various institutes proved it to be non-toxic in therapeutic dose. It as a nervine tonic and immuno-modulatory agent, improves will-power and memory power. Useful in treating sleep disturbances. Safety Study Herbadict tablets were administered in a dose of 2 tablets thrice daily for three weeks in 25 healthy individuals and observed for any adverse-effects. No apparent ill effects could be observed in any of the individuals. This study proves the safety of the product. Clinical Results
The drug was tried in the patients suffering from alcoholic and also viral hepatitis. The drug was administered for three weeks in 12 patients suffering from alcoholic hepatitis and 20 patients with viral hepatitis. Ecterus of sclera was cleared in an average of 7 days. It reduced general body weakness, and fever was also minimised. SGPT level and serum bilirubin levels came down within week. Action of Herbadict in cirrhosis of liver The effectiveness of Herbadict was evaluated in 10 patients of alcoholic cirrhosis with ascitis. A significant reduction in SGPT level was observed 30% reduction in serum bilirubin level was also observed. General condition of the patients also improved. Effect of Herbadict on memory loss The medicine was tried in 6 patients of alcoholism who complained of disturbance in Memory process. After a treatment for 30 days with the drug they found it beneficial in improving their memory power also. This may be due to the presence of Tinospora cordifolia, Withania somnifera and Rajata Bhasma. Effect of Herbadict in individuals suffering from insomnia and disturbed sleep The study carried out in 10 patients of alcoholism who complained of disturbed sleep (both difficulty in falling asleep and maintaining sleep). Administration of Herbadict for three weeks in a dose of 2 tablets tid found to be very useful. This enhanced their duration of sleep and also period of NREM sleep. By this study it is clear that Herbadict helps in inducing natural sleep patterns.
Among the patients who were treated with Herbadict at least 50% could quit the habit. This may be due to the enhancement of their willpower. Apart from the hepatoprotective property and the prevention of withdrawal symptoms the enhancement of willpower helping to overcome alcoholic addiction is an important and interesting observation.
