Most of the diseases are considered to be psychosomatic. A perfect mind body balance is given due importance in Ayurveda. It is essential to develop on effective remedy for psychiatric and psychosomatic diseases pertaining to nervous system are considered to be difficult to treat. But Ayurveda is treating such disorders successfully since a very long time. On the basis of Ayurvedic principles and research studies, highly effective drugs have been selected and a formulation useful in epilepsy, anxiety disorder and neuromuscular disease is prepared. This drug was also found to be very useful as a brain tonic in children.

Processed in the decoctions of Brahmi (centella asiatica), Vacha (acorus calamus), Jyotishmati (celostrus paniculatus), Jatamamsi (Nardostachys jatamamsi), Sarpagandha (Rauolfia serpentine) and Dashamoola. SHANKHA PUSHPA
Botanical Name: Convolvulus pluricaulis, chois Family: Convolvulaceae Botanical Description: A prostrate herb, woody in nature.
Chemistry: Convolvine, convolvamine, phyllambine and the main alkaloid Shankhapushpine.
Pharmacological and Clinical Studies The extract reduced the spontaneous activity of mice, the reduction being more marked in amphetamine treated hyperactive mice. The extract also exhibited potentiation of phenobarbitone hypnosis in mice and morphine analgesia in albino rats. The extract caused reduction on the fighting response of mice and abolished conditioned avoidance response without affecting the escape response. The electrically induced seizures in rats and induced tremors in mice were antagonized by the extract (Sharma et at -1965). Different types of stress including psychological, chemical and traumatic were produced in Rats and Rabbits treated with Shankhapushpi, active principles showed marked reduction in I-131 uptake, Acetylcholine, etc. This suggests that probably the drug affects various glands through neuro-humors particularly acetylcholine (Jour Res. Ind. Med J. 1974). A study on a series of 30 cases of Anxiety status was conducted with the syrup of Shankhapushpi. A significant reduction in symptoms as well as anxiety level was found which established its psychotropic property. A comparative study of barbiturate Hypnosis potentiation effect of Medhya Rasayana drugs Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) and Mandukaparni (Hydrocotyle asiatica) - (Shukla S.P.). Clinical evaluation of Medhya Rasayana in cases on Non-Depressive Anxiety neurosis significant clinical relief and favorable shift of grade of clinical of Anxiety and Depression scale were also found reduced (Kaushik K. Botanical Name: Centella asialica Family: Umbelliferae Part used: Whole plant Chemistry: Brahmin (Hydrocotyline Calkaloid), Asiaticoside, Vellarine, Resen, Asiatic acid, Volarile at. (Indegenous drugs of India). Pharmacological and Clinical Studies Significant immunopotentiation property of the centella asiatic in the animal as well as human being was reported. This drug also provided significant relief in insomnia and increased immediate memory sign, reduced mental fatigue and blood pressure. (Single G. 1982). Centella asiatica extract was found to posses potent C.N.S. depressant properties. In addition it was found to be having anti-depressant activity also which was appeared to be through the D2 receptor and acholenimimetic action, which is blocked by atropine chloropromazine. VACHA Botanical Name: Acorus calamus Family: Araceae Habitat: Distributed throughout India in areas elevated upto 1,800m, in marshes, also cultivated. Botanical Description: A semi-aquatic rhizomatous perennial herb.
Chemistry: Drug rhizomes contain 1.5-3.5% of a yellow aromatic volatile oil essential oil containing calamene, calamenol, calameon, asarone.
Rhizome: Aqueous (10%) extract and alcoholic extract hypo-thermic and hypo-tensive. Acts as anti-convulsant in higher dose and also acts as CNS depressant. Its tranquilizing action is proved. It prolongs hypnosis. Essential oil from dried rhizomes has anti-convulsant, antiveratrimic and antiarrhymiatic action. KUMARI
Botanical Name: Aloe barnadensis Family: Liliaceae Habitat: Cultivated or seen wild in hedge-rows in the drier parts of India. Botanical Description: A coarse perennial with short stem and shallow root system.

Botanical Name: Cinnamomum verum Presl Family: Lauraceae Habitat: Distributed along the west coast, tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. Botanical Description: A moderate sized evergreen tree, 8-18m in height and 50 cm in diameter with reddish brown soft bark, having numerous small warts.
Part used: Bark, Oil Pharmacological Action of some Individual Ingredients Sida cordifolia (Bala): Its is proved to be highly effective in neuromuscular disorders. Its analgesic, anti-arthritic properties are also well known. Rosa Sindura: Safe preparation of mercury, in the form of sulphide, acts as a catalyst to the action of other drugs. It also acts as nervine tonic. Shilajith: Possesses hypolpidaemic, hypocholesteraemic properties, reduce atherosclerotic changes. Useful in musculoskeletal disorders. It also helps to improve the muscular power. Kapikacchu: A well-known drug for its aphrodisiac and dopaminergic properties. It is useful drug in Parkinsonism. Sarpagandha: Well-known drug for its anxiolytic properties. As the drug as a whole is used (not the active principles) its adverse effects are not seen. Safety Study The study was carried out in adult group and a group of children separately. Twenty individuals were studied in both the groups. Adults were administered the medicine at a dose of 2 tablet tid and children were given at dose of 1 tablet twice a day for three weeks. A careful observation was done for any possible side effects. But no individuals complained of any adverse reaction. Clinical Results Effect of Prajna Forte on epilepsy: Twenty five patients suffering from epilepsy were treated with Prajna forte in a dosage of 2 tabs, two times daily for a duration of 45 days. It was found to be highly effective in reducing the duration and severity of convulsions. Gap between the attacks was greatly increased. Effect of Prajna Forte on anxiety disorders: The study was carried out in 40 patients suffering from anxiety disorders. The medicine was administered for duration of 30 days. A significant improvement in Hamilton's anxiety scale could be observed. Patients also expressed a significant relief in irritability and mood. Effect of Prajna Forte in Hemiplegia: Twenty patients suffering from hemiplegia were selected irrespective of their age and sex. The chronicity of disease varied between 6 months and 3 years. 80% of cases were of cerebro-vascular accidents. Treatment for a duration of 21 days showed wonderful results. A 50% increase in muscle power was observed which was highly significant at P<0.001. Improvement was also observed in dysarthcia experienced by 5 patients. A highly significant reduction in Blood pressure (P<0.001) was observed (especially in those who had hypertension). In children it helped in relieving the stress during the examination period and it also helped in improving the memory power. Indications Epilepsy, anxiety disorders, neuromuscular disorders like Parkinsonism, Hemiplegia, cerebral palsy, memory loss and Depression. Side Effects: No major side effects have been observed even with prolonged treatment. Dosage: 2 tablets, 2 or 3 times daily (adult).
